Why wouldn’t we take the logical step of expanding the town council to seven members by adding two at-large seats before pursuing city status at a more appropriate time in the future?
Adding two additional council members now could help prepare the community for a future transition to city status. Structuring those positions as at-large seats would allow the council to expand without requiring immediate redistricting. Redistricting could instead occur after the next federal census, when updated population data is available and municipalities typically redraw districts anyway. This approach would avoid the cost and administrative burden of conducting a special census while still positioning the community for a smoother transition to city status later.
Will the world end, will the sky fall, will everything come crashing down if Whitestown transitions from a town to a city and elects our first Mayor? Of course not (well, I guess that may depend on who becomes the Mayor..haha),
but it will certainly change the face of local government and how our fair town is managed.
